Is Chat GPT Harming Your Health? A Performance Coach’s Perspective

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

As human behavior specialists, we want to share with you why using large language models like ChatGPT may have a negative impact on your health.

While these models have made significant strides in natural language processing and can be incredibly useful for a range of applications, they also come with some potential significant downsides.

First and foremost, using these models can be incredibly time-consuming and mentally taxing. Interacting with ChatGPT for extended periods can lead to fatigue, cognitive overload, and mental strain, which can impact our ability to focus and perform other cognitive tasks.

TIPS:

Take regular breaks:

It's important to take regular breaks to give your mind a chance to rest and recharge. Instead of using ChatGPT for an extended period of time without any breaks, try to take short breaks every 30-45 minutes. During this time, you can engage in other activities that help to relax your mind, such as taking a walk, meditating, or practicing deep breathing exercises.

Set limits on usage:

Another way to combat the mental strain of using ChatGPT for extended periods is to set limits on your usage. Decide on a specific amount of time that you will spend interacting with ChatGPT each day, and stick to it. This will help you avoid spending too much time on ChatGPT, which can lead to cognitive overload and mental strain. Additionally, you can consider using other methods of communication and problem-solving that don't rely on language models, such as talking to friends or colleagues, reading a book, or using pen and paper to jot down your thoughts.

Additionally, these models can also perpetuate bias and misinformation. While they are trained on vast amounts of data, that data is not always objective or representative of all perspectives. This can lead to biases in the responses provided by these models, which can further perpetuate stereotypes and inequalities.

TIPS:

Be critical of the information provided:

Always question the responses provided by the language model and evaluate them critically. Look for sources to verify the information provided and try to find a variety of perspectives on the topic to gain a well-rounded understanding.

Contribute to the development of unbiased language models:

As a user of language models, you can also contribute to their development. Provide feedback on the responses provided by the language model, report any biased or offensive language, and support the development of models that prioritize fairness and inclusivity.

Furthermore, using large language models like ChatGPT can also contribute to spreading disinformation and fake news. Without proper oversight and training, these models can easily be used to generate false or misleading content that can be shared widely on social media, causing confusion and harm.

TIPS:

Fact-check and verify the information:

It is crucial to fact-check and verify any information received from large language models before sharing it with others. This can involve checking the sources, credibility, and accuracy of the information provided. By taking the time to verify the information, we can prevent the spread of false or misleading content.

Use critical thinking and skepticism:

We should approach information received from large language models with critical thinking and skepticism. This means analyzing the information, questioning its validity, and considering alternative perspectives. By using critical thinking skills, we can identify biases and misinformation and make informed decisions about the information we consume and share.

Lastly, the over-reliance on these models can impact our ability to communicate and connect with others. As human beings, we rely on social interaction and connection to thrive, and relying on ChatGPT for all our communication needs can limit our ability to connect on a deeper level with others.

TIPS:

Limit your use of ChatGPT:

While ChatGPT can be a useful tool, it's important to limit your use of it and not rely on it for all your communication needs. Try to engage in more face-to-face conversations or use other communication tools like phone calls or video chats to connect with others.

Practice active listening:

To build deeper connections with others, it's important to listen to them actively. This means focusing on what they are saying, asking questions, and showing empathy. By practicing active listening, you can improve your communication skills and build stronger connections with others. Get out in-person or virtual and make connections, listen and be social.

In conclusion, while ChatGPT and other large language models have undoubtedly revolutionized the field of natural language processing, they are not without their downsides.

We know that evolution and change are inevitable, but a potential negative side effect comes with every positive innovation. As human behavior specialists and performance coaches, we just want people to be aware of these potential negative impacts and help individuals make informed decisions about using these technologies.
